The Turth About Chaga

Why we choose not to use chaga in our blends...

Despite its popularity, we intentionally avoid using Chaga "Mushroom" (Inonotus obliquus) out of a commitment to sustainability and health-first sourcing.


1. Sustainability in decline

Wild chaga is overharvested worldwide. The fungus grows slowly on birch trees, reproducing only once in its lifetime- and prematurely chopping it off can prevent it from spreading spores and affect tree health.


2. High in oxalic acid

Chaga contains extremely high levels of oxalates (up to ~14 g per 100 g), which can contribute to kidney stones or acute kidney injury when consumed regularly (jkms.org). Even in recent clinical reports, chaga consumption led to oxalate nephropathy requiring medical treatment (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).


What we do offer instead-

At Sporgy, sustainability and health guide every decision. Instead of chaga, we proudly use responsibly sourced medicinal mushrooms like reishi, lion’s mane, maitake, cordyceps, and turkey tail, all wild-foraged or sustainably and organically cultivated and never at risk of ecological collapse.

These mushrooms are rich in adaptogens, antioxidants, and gut-supporting compounds, delivering benefits without the high oxalate levels or environmental hazard of chaga.
